Buddy Scheme

I am looking for a buddy

I would like to become a buddy scheme volunteer

Hello! Welcome to the Buddy Scheme page!

The Buddy Scheme is a student-led initiative that aims to make your time at university the best it can be. We aim to achieve this with our community of very engaged and dedicated Buddies who are happy to help in any way they can. Students who request a Buddy will be matched with one of our Buddies who will help to provide support and become a friendly face. This can be through face-to-face meetings (adhering to local Welsh Government guidelines), online catchups and even just messaging a student to check on their wellbeing. In return, not only do Buddies get to develop key transferable skills like communication, organisation, and interpersonal skills but they also get the opportunity to make a real difference to students during one of the most turbulent and challenging times of their lives so far.

If we haven’t convinced you just yet just read these quotes from our Buddy Scheme Alumni

“Hi, I’m Hannah, and I was a member of the Buddy Scheme last year! Being involved in the scheme was really rewarding, as I was able to reach out to a variety of students and have some lovely, open conversations. I found it especially fulfilling to put my active listening skills into practice and as a result I truly felt like I made a positive impact on the lives of a few people. I recommend the scheme for anyone who wants to help support fellow students in a friendly, informal setting.” – Hannah Yates

“Having been given the opportunity to participate in the buddy scheme from 2019-2020, I saw in its fullest a well-structured support network implemented. It engaged with both home and international students and helped reach some of Cardiff University’s most isolated. I wholeheartedly recommend The Buddy Scheme” - Thomas May, a 3rd year BA French and Spanish student

“Being a buddy for the Buddy Scheme has taught me many skills such as active listening, emotional intelligence and how to be empathetic towards others. In addition, it has also taught me the true meaning of friendship and how being a ray of hope and sunshine will always make someone’s day better” – Asha Armin (Vice-President of the Buddy Scheme, 3rd Year BA French and Spanish Student)
