About Me
Hello / Shwmae! I’m Shekina, your Vice President Heath Park Campus! I am a postgraduate student currently doing my masters in Physiotherapy.
I grew up in Makurdi, the capital city of Benue State, Nigeria where I studied until high school and then moved to the United Arab Emirates for my undergraduate studies in Physiotherapy. All my life I have been a huge fan of sports and have played football for more years than I can remember. I was the captain of the team during my final year of undergraduate studies. After which I went back to serve my country and worked as a physiotherapist for 2 years in Nigeria.
My involvement with the Students’ Union began when I joined the Cardiff University Students’ Union (CUSU) team. I volunteered to be on the fresher’s team which ensured new students had all the help they needed on move in day. I also had the opportunity to interact greatly with students by being on the Heath Park Campus Executive Committee, Student Senate and also a member of the African Caribbean Society here at Cardiff University.
Having been here only since last September, I have spoken to amazing students and highly familiarised myself with the surroundings. During which I am aware of the issues faced by students, how it greatly affects them as individuals and impacts other arears of their life.
Being a heath park student, when the opportunity arose to represent the views of the students, ensure their voices are being heard, transform and improve their student experience, create an inclusive, empowering and supportive campus, I could not pass it up! I know the difference we need to make, and I am here to make it.
My Priorities for this year include:
- To improve Student Mental Health and Support Services for Heath students at placements across Wales.
- To improve Student Wellbeing and Support Services accessibility for Heath Students.
- Increase Students’ Union services and campaigns at the Heath Campus.
- Facilitate better interdisciplinary events, clinical workshops, skills and training.
- Improve and create more awareness of the peer to peer mentoring schemes for various minority groups.
