Academic Future

On the 28th January 2025, the University launched a formal consultation on proposed changes to the academic make-up of the University. The proposals, in the University’s words, are designed to help secure the University’s long-term future. These proposals include cuts equivalent to 400 full-time academic staff, the closure of several schools and programs, and the merger of others.

The full list of proposals included in University’s statement are:

  • A reduction of academic headcount by c.400 FTE (7% of total workforce), using compulsory redundancy, only if absolutely necessary
  • Ceasing subjects and programmes in Ancient History, Modern Languages and Translation, Music, Nursing, and Religion and Theology
  • Increasing student and staff ratios across the University, while at the same time revising our approaches to learning, teaching and assessment, and simplifying bureaucratic processes
  • Bringing complementary disciplines together through proposed school mergers:
    • The creation of the School of Natural Sciences (merge Chemistry, Earth Sciences and Physics)
    • The creation of the School of Data Science, Computing and Mathematics (merge Computer Science and Maths)
    • The creation of the School of Human and Social Sciences (merge Social Sciences, Geography and Planning) and
    • The creation of the School of Global Humanities (merge English, Communication and Philosophy, Welsh, and remaining elements of History Archaeology and Religion and Modern Languages).

While we do not yet know what the outcome of this consultation will be, we want you to know that the Students' Union will listen, lobby, and advocate for you all.

What is the timeline?

29th January – 6th May 2025: The University will formally consult on the proposals

June 2025: University Council will approve the final plan

September 2025: The University will begin to implement the approved changes.

Our Key Principles

We are taking immediate action to challenge these proposals and demand better solutions.

  1. Challenging the cuts – We will hold the University to account, insisting they fully explore alternative solutions before making decisions.
  2. Protecting your education – We demand clear assurances that current students will not suffer as a result of these proposals.
  3. Amplifying student voices – The consultation period runs for 90 days, and we will use this time to gather students’ concerns and ensure they are represented at every stage.
  4. Standing with staff & stakeholders – We will work alongside trade unions, affected schools, and key stakeholders to fight for alternative solutions.

What we are doing?

  1. Student town hall – We have secured for the Vice-Chancellor to hold a student town hall for students to share concerns and ask questions.
  2. Consultation feedback – We are collecting student's views from across the University to ensure students are represented at every stage. Complete our initial consultation survey here.

Ar yr 28ain o Ionawr 2025, fe wnaeth y Brifysgol lansio ymgynghoriad ffurfiol ar newidiadau arfaethedig i gyfansoddiad academaidd y Brifysgol. Mae'r cynigion, yng ngeiriau'r Brifysgol, wedi'u dylunio er mwyn ddiogelu dyfodol hirdymor y Brifysgol. Mae'r cynigion yn cynnwys toriadau sy'n cyfateb i 400 o staff academaidd amser llawn, cau sawl ysgol a rhaglen, a chyfuno eraill.

Y rhestr lawn o gynigion wedi'u cynnwys yn natganiad y Brifysgol yw:

    • Ysgol y Gwyddorau Naturiol (uno Cemeg, Gwyddorau’r Ddaear a Ffiseg)
    • Ysgol Gwyddor Data, Cyfrifiadura a Mathemateg (uno Cyfrifiadureg a Mathemateg)

Rydym yn cymryd camau ar unwaith i herio'r cynigion hyn a mynnu datrysiadau gwell.

  1. Herio'r toriadau – Byddwn yn dwyn y Brifysgol i gyfrif, gan fynnu eu bod yn archwilio atebion amgen yn llawn cyn gwneud penderfyniadau.
  2. Diogelu eich addysg – Rydym yn mynnu sicrwydd na fydd myfyrwyr presennol yn dioddef o ganlyniad i'r cynigion hyn.
  3. Lleisio barn myfyrwyr – Bydd y cyfnod ymgynghori yn para am 90 diwrnod, a byddwn yn defnyddio'r amser hwn i gasglu pryderon myfyrwyr a sicrhau eu bod yn cael eu cynrychioli ar bob adeg.
