An Update From Your Sabbatical Officers Update on Cardiff University Student Encampment

On Tuesday 15th May 2024 we published A Statement from Your Sabbatical Officers on Cardiff University Student Encampment. The encampment was set up by a coalition of Welsh students fighting for the liberation of Palestine. In this statement we outlined our support for students' right to peacefully protest and our commitment to supporting the wellbeing of our student community. We also outlined our intention to maintain an active and clear line of communication with students engaged in the camp, and that we will continue to liaise with the University to ensure the welfare of all students is safeguarded.

Over the last nine weeks and throughout the time of the Student Encampment we’ve been doing just that. On top of this we have also worked hard to facilitate a number of conversations between representatives of Cardiff University and representatives of the Student Encampment. So far, they have met on eight separate occasions in meetings facilitated by the Students’ Union, with the most recent meetings focused on the demands set out by the Encampment.

Today’s statement aims to provide an update on the progress that has been made as a result of this facilitated dialogue. The Student Encampment and Cardiff University reached an agreement on a number of University commitments, with the current progress between the parties also resulting in the Encampment voluntarily disbanding on Wednesday 17th July. These commitments include:

  • Confirmation from the University that they do not hold any direct or indirect investments in any of the companies specifically named in the correspondence from the Encampment or in any of the companies listed on the UN’s Database pursuant to Human Rights Council Resolution 31/36, or investments in Israeli sovereign debt.
  • A review of the University’s current definition of armaments as outlined in the University’s Ethical Investment Policy, and its relation to research partnerships.
  • A review of the University’s Student Future Code of Ethics, which would include alignment with principles from the Funding Advisory Panel and graduate recruitment events.
  • The publication of the University’s investment holdings by Monday 30th September 2024.
  • Confirmation from the University that they have not received any anonymous donations from organisations in at least the last ten years, and that all donations by organisations can be found on the donor roll.
  • The publication of information detailing the University’s ongoing work to support the rebuilding of Palestinian education.
  • The doubling of the number of asylum seeker scholarships available from the current 6 to 12.
  • An agreement between the Campaign for at Risk Academics (CARA) and the University to host a displaced academic from Gaza.
  • The creation of a specific web and intranet content detailing support for Palestinian students.
  • The development of culturally sensitive wellbeing and counselling drop-in sessions.

We will be updating the progress made against the full commitments as the work is completed.

We would like to place on record our thanks to all those that have been involved in this dialogue, and to those that have been able to approach these conversations in good faith with the aim to provide a resolution in the interests of all students. We will continue to work with all parties involved as the meetings and reviews are ongoing.

Any students impacted by recent and ongoing events are encouraged to engage with the support services available.

Support Services

Students can contact Student Connect at the Centre for Student Life to access student support services, including counselling and wellbeing advice. Students can also access free, confidential and impartial advice from Student Advice in the Students’ Union.

If a student is concerned about the impact of recent events on their studies, they can contact their personal tutor and discuss the extenuating circumstances policy. This policy includes provisions for those that have experienced bereavement and adverse personal or family circumstances, and we would strongly encourage those impacted in any way to reach out to their Schools in order to make use of the policy where appropriate.

The University also offers pastoral and spiritual support to all members of the university community regardless of whether you hold any explicit faith. You can contact one of the chaplains and they will arrange a time to meet with you or put you in contact with a representative from your own faith.

Your Sabbatical Officer Team, 2024-25.
