Trigger Warning: this article includes mentions of abortion and discussions relating to pro-choice and pro-life protests

The Students’ Union is pro-choice. This has been the case since 2019 when over 800 students debated the Students’ Union position on abortion rights and in 2022 when students reiterated their support for this stance. As your Students’ Union Officers we are in support of all students making their own decisions in relation to their body, which is in line with the Union’s pro-choice stance and the law.

You may have seen an external ‘pro-life’ group outside the University Main Building today. This group is neither affiliated to the Students’ Union or University and as such we have no ability to prevent them from protesting, engaging or speaking to members of the public in a public area – the pavement outside the University Main Building is not part of the University’s estate.

Today myself and your elected officers opted to stage a silent counter-protest where we held up ‘pro-choice’ signs and were joined by many members of the University community. Thank you to all of the students who joined us today, it was fantastic to see students supporting each other and standing up for what they believe is right.

As a Union, we will be advocating and campaigning for education on a person's right to choose. If you would like to be involved or if you would like to discuss further on this matter, please do reach out by emailing me at supresident@cardiff.ac.uk

Rhybudd cynnwys: Mae’r erthygl hon yn trafod erthyliad a phrotestiadau sydd o blaid dewis (pro-choice) ac o blaid bywyd (pro-life).

Mae Undeb y Myfyrwyr o blaid dewis (‘pro-choice’). Mae hyn wedi bod yn wir ers 2019 pan drafododd dros 800 o fyfyrwyr safbwynt Undeb y Myfyrwyr ar hawliau erthyliad ac yn 2022 ailadroddodd myfyrwyr eu cefnogaeth am y safiad hwn. Fel eich Swyddogion Sabothol yn Undeb y Myfyrwyr rydym yn cefnogi pob myfyriwr i wneud eu penderfyniadau eu hunain yn gysylltiedig â’u cyrff, yn unol â safiad yr Undeb o blaid dewis, a’r gyfraith.

Efallai eich bod wedi gweld grŵp sydd o blaid bywyd (‘pro-life’) allanol, tu allan i Brif Adeilad y Brifysgol heddiw. Nid yw’r grŵp hwn yn gysylltiedig ag Undeb y Myfyrwyr na’r Brifysgol ac felly nid oes gennym y gallu i’w hatal rhag protestio, ymgysylltu, neu siarad ag aelodau o’r cyhoedd mewn man cyhoeddus – nid yw’r pafin y tu allan i Brif Adeilad y Brifysgol yn rhan o ystâd y Brifysgol.

Heddiw penderfynais i a’ch swyddogion etholedig gynnal gwrth-brotest ddistaw lle gwnaethom ddangos arwyddion gyda’r geiriau ‘pro-choice’ ac ymunodd llawer o aelodau o gymuned y Brifysgol gyda ni. Diolch i’r holl fyfyrwyr a ymunodd â ni heddiw, roedd yn wych gweld myfyrwyr yn cefnogi ei gilydd ac yn sefyll dros yr hyn y maent yn ei gredu sy’n iawn.

Fel Undeb, byddwn yn eirioli ac yn ymgyrchu dros addysg ar hawl bob person i ddewis. Os hoffech gymryd rhan neu os hoffech drafod y mater hwn ymhellach, cysylltwch â mi drwy e-bostio supresident@caerdydd.ac.uk.
