Societies are a core part of student life, and for many become the most memorable part of their time at university. At Cardiff we have over 250 Societies to choose from so there will definitely be something for you!

I first joined a Society in my second year and loved every minute of it. It’s where I’ve met many of my closest friends, and my love for commercial dance evolved. I then went on to become the Secretary for FAD (Fitness and Dance) Dance Society for two years, where I explored my passion for social media and teaching dance. The sense of community between us really made it feel like a family, I can’t recommend it enough!

Why you should join a Society

Joining a Society is a great way to give yourself a break from your academic work, and explore new experiences. This could be trying a brand new activity, or pushing yourself out of your comfort zone by meeting new people.

At the start of term, most Societies will host ‘Give it a Go’ sessions that you can get involved with and see what best suits you. You might find a new hobby or learn a new skill.

Most importantly, being a part of a Society is the best way to make friends and find your people! You get to interact with people who share your interests, opinions and passions. Joining your course-based Society is an amazing way of getting to know lots of people on your course as well.

Being a member of a Society creates an abundant sense of community and belonging, which is integral to student life. This is celebrated through Society sessions and events, and even kit! Love Cardiff have recently introduced Y1 bespoke fleeces if you and your Society want to be matching 24/7!

"I made so many of my closest friends in my Society and my university experience would’ve been so different had I not joined. It is also the perfect way to try something new or pick up an old hobby!"

India, Undergraduate, LAWPOL, FAD Dance Society.

"Hands down joining a Society changed my university experience! I was really nervous to join, but I’m glad I pushed myself because I’ve made friends for life, have amazing memories and enjoyed being in a Society throughout my time at Cardiff. It was a great way to balance the pressure of academic life and meet new people. I loved every second of it!"

Hannah, Undergraduate, SOCSCI, FAD Dance Society.

"Throughout my time in university I was both on committee and also an active member across a few Societies. It was one of my favourite parts of my university experience, enabling me to find likeminded people and some of my best friends. You can go in knowing nobody and with knowing very little about the Society and still have an amazing time."

Em, Undergraduate, ENCAP, Feminist Society, FAD Dance Society.

Top tips for joining a new Society

Joining a new Society can be scary, especially if you are a Fresher or don’t know anyone. Something to remember is that everyone is either in the same boat or has once been in your shoes! The best way to get involved is to push yourself out of your comfort zone and speak to everyone. Our Societies are super welcoming and inclusive to make it as comfortable as possible for you to participate.

Remember, Societies are not just for Freshers! Whether you are in your final year or doing a postgraduate degree, it’s not too late to try something new, there will be something for you. I joined Coppafeel! Society as a Postgraduate student and became the first Postgraduate representative for the Cardiff Uni Boob Team and FAD.

"As someone who didn’t join a Society for the first two years of university, the difference in my social life once I joined a Society was massive. I made so many new friends, and the demographic of my friendship group changed too, and as a result my third year was the best year by a mile."

Sam, Undergraduate, CARBS, FAD Dance Society.

"Joining a Society opened so many doors for me! As a Master’s student, I gained numerous transferable skills which aided my transition to work, alongside meeting some great people."

Rosie, Postgraduate Taught, LAWPOL, Politics Society

Ymuna â Chymdeithas yn ystod y Glas!

Mae cymdeithasau yn rhan bwysig o fywyd myfyrwyr, ac ar gyfer llawer dyma’r darn mwyaf cofiadwy o’u hamser yn y brifysgol. Yma yng Nghaerdydd mae gennym dros 250 o gymdeithasau i ddewis ohonynt, felly mi fydd yna’n bendant rhywbeth i ti!

Fe wnes i ymuno â chymdeithas am y tro gyntaf yn fy ail flwyddyn, ac fe wnes i garu pob eiliad. Dyma le gwnes i gwrdd â llawer o fy ffrindiau agosaf, a datblygodd fy nghariad am ddawns. Es ymlaen i fod yn Ysgrifenyddes ar gyfer FAD (Cymdeithas Dawns a Ffitrwydd) am ddwy flynedd, gan fagu fy niddordeb mewn dysgu dawnsio a chyfryngau cymdeithasol. Gwnaeth y teimlad o gymuned rhyngom wneud iddo deimlo fel teulu, ac roedd yn brofiad anhygoel!

Pam dylet ymuno â chymdeithas

Mae ymuno â chymdeithas yn ffordd wych o gymryd saib o dy waith academaidd, a chael profiadau newydd. Gall hyn fod trwy roi cynnig ar weithgaredd cwbl newydd, neu gwrdd â phobl newydd.

Ar ddechrau’r tymor, mae’r rhan fwyaf o gymdeithasau’n cynnal sesiynau ‘Rho Gynnig Arni’ er mwyn i ti weld beth rwyt ti’n ei fwynhau. Efallai fe dei di o hyd i ddiddordeb newydd neu ddysgu sgil newydd.

Bwysicaf oll, bod yn rhan o gymdeithas yw’r ffordd orau o wneud ffrindiau a dod o hyd i dy bobl! Mae’n gyfle i gymdeithasu gyda phobl sy’n rhannu’r un diddordeb, barn, ac angerdd â thi. Mae ymuno â chymdeithas yn seiliedig ar dy gwrs hefyd yn ffordd dda o gwrdd â phobl sy’n astudio’r un peth.

Mae bod yn aelod o gymdeithas yn creu ymdeimlad o gymuned a pherthyn, sy’n ganolog i fywyd myfyrwyr. Dathlir hyn trwy sesiynau a digwyddiadau cymdeithasau, a hyd yn oed eu cit! Mae Caru Caerdydd newydd gyflwyno siwmperi Y1 wedi’u personoli ar gyfer cymdeithasau!

"Fe wnes i gymaint o ffrindiau agos yn fy nghymdeithas a byddai fy mhrofiad prifysgol wedi bod yn gwbl wahanol os na wnes i ymuno. Mae hefyd yn ffordd berffaith o roi cynnig ar rywbeth newydd neu ail-ddechrau gyda hen ddiddordeb!"

India, Myfyriwr Israddedig, LAWPOL, Cymdeithas Ddawns FAD

"Yn bendant fe wnaeth ymuno â chymdeithas trawsnewid fy mhrofiad prifysgol! Roeddwn i’n nerfus iawn wrth ymuno, ond rwy’n falch fy mod wedi, oherwydd rydw i wedi gwneud ffrindiau oes ac atgofion anhygoel, ac wedi mwynhau bod yn rhan o gymdeithas trwy gydol fy amser yng Nghaerdydd. Roedd yn ffordd wych o gydbwyso pwysau bywyd academaidd a chwrdd â phobl newydd. Fe wnes i garu pob eiliad!"

Hannah, Myfyriwr Israddedig, SOCSCI, Cymdeithas Ddawns FAD

"Trwy gydol fy amser yn y brifysgol roeddwn ar bwyllgorau ac yn aelod gweithredol ar draws sawl cymdeithas. Roedd yn un o fy hoff bethau am fy mhrofiad prifysgol, gan fy ngalluogi i ddod o hyd i bobl a oedd yn debyg i mi a rhai o fy ffrindiau gorau. Rwyt ti’n gallu ymuno tra’n adnabod neb a heb wybod llawer am y gymdeithas, a chael amser anhygoel."

Em, Myfyriwr Israddedig, ENCAP, Cymdeithas Ffeministaidd, Cymdeithas Ddawns FAD

Cyngor ar gyfer ymuno â chymdeithas newydd

Gall ymuno â chymdeithas newydd fod ychydig yn frawychus, yn enwedig os wyt yn las-fyfyriwr neu ddim yn nabod unrhyw un eto. Rhywbeth i gofio yw bod pawb yn yr un cwch neu wedi bod o’r blaen! Y ffordd orau o gymryd rhan yw trwy wthio dy hun i roi cynnig ar rywbeth newydd a siarad gyda phawb. Mae ein cymdeithasau yn hynod groesawgar a chynhwysol, gyda swyddogion yn gweithio’n galed i’w gwneud yn hygyrch i bawb.

Cofia, nid yw cymdeithasau ar gyfer glas-fyfyrwyr yn unig! Boed os wyt yn dy flwyddyn olaf, neu’n astudio gradd ôl-raddedig, bydd rhywbeth i ti. Fe wnes i ymuno â Chymdeithas Coppafeel! fel myfyriwr ôl-raddedig, a fi oedd cynrychiolydd ôl-raddedigion cyntaf Tîm Boob Caerdydd a FAD.

"Fel rhywun na wnaeth ymuno â chymdeithas yn fy nhwy flynedd gyntaf yn y brifysgol, roedd y gwahaniaeth i fy mywyd cymdeithasol wedi i mi wneud yn anferthol. Gwnes i gymaint o ffrindiau newydd, a gwnaeth demograffeg fy ngrŵp o ffrindiau newid hefyd, ac o ganlyniad roedd fy nhrydedd flwyddyn llawer gwell."

Sam, Myfyriwr Israddedig, CARBS, Cymdeithas Ddawns FAD

"Gwnaeth ymuno â chymdeithas agor gymaint o ddrysau i mi! Fel myfyriwr ôl-raddedig, ennillais lawer o sgiliau trosglwyddadwy a oedd o ddefnydd wrth symud at fyd gwaith, ynghyd â chwrdd â phobl anhygoel."

Rosie, Myfyriwr Ôl-raddedig a Addysgir, LAWPOL, Cymdeithas y Gyfraith
