National Societies Awards 2018
Cardiff University Students’ Union invites you to celebrate the very best Societies from around the UK.
We are excited to announce that the 2018 National Societies Awards will be held on the 9th May 2018 in Great Hall, Cardiff University Students' Union. Now entering its third year, the event is moving to Wales for the first time to celebrate the successes and achievements of student societies from across the UK.
The National Societies Awards was first held at UWE in 2016 and travelled to Nottingham in its second year. This year’s event promises to build on the success of previous years, offering an exciting programme of entertainment, culminating in the hotly anticipated Awards ceremony.
Your ticket will get you entry to awards ceremony, a three course meal and entry to our after party, as well as entry to our Development Afternoon. Doors open for the Awards Ceremony at 6:30pm with food being served from 7:30pm. The Development Afternoon starts at 12:30pm on the afternoon of the 9th.

Development Afternoon
We will be hosting a series of free networking and development sessions on the afternoon of 9th May. These sessions, aimed at committee members, Sabbatical Officers and SU Staff, will help you to develop your Societies and yourselves. Join us from 12:30pm in Y Plas, on the second floor of the SU Building for a fun and informative afternoon!
12:30pm – Doors Open
We’ll be opening the doors at 12:30pm for registration. Feel free to bring your lunch or grab some food at one of our Food Outlets!
1pm – High Society
Hosted by NUS
Supporting or running excellent societies is as easy as making a cup of tea. That is, on the surface it’s simple but it can be complicated and differs from place to place. In this session we will analyse the different ways we run and support societies and evaluate what successful societies look like.
2pm – Troubleshooting
Hosted by Lamorna Hooker and Sam Cook, Societies Team at Cardiff University Students’ Union
This is your opportunity to find solutions to your Society problems and share the amazing things you’re doing. Bring a list of questions you want answering and problems you need solving and help each other find solutions through peer-support and sharing good practices.
3pm - Getting the most out of Student Volunteers
Hosted by Josh Gibbs, Head of Student Advice at Cardiff University Students’ Union
Societies thrive on the dedication and hard work of the volunteers who run them. In this session, we will look at different ideas and theories behind managing volunteers to explore how you can better support student volunteers, and the different ways committee members, Sabbatical Officers and members of staff can do this.
4pm – Building Tour
Join us for a tour of our SU Building and the services we provide for our students. And, for the Sherlock fans amongst you, we’ll also explore how the SU building was converted into a hospital for the 2017 episode “The Lying Detective”.

Hello, Students. We’re Hello Student
Your studies, your social life, your whole experience of university. It starts with your home.
Our homes put you right next to your university, close to the city centre, and living with other students.
We take classic, characterful, buildings and turn them into amazing student homes. You could live in a centuries-old church, a library, or a ballet school. A city registry. A funky 70s office block. We also offer purpose-built, beautifully designed, brand new student accommodation.
Inside: everything you need. Like high-speed, reliable internet. High-spec kitchens, ensuite bathrooms and laundry on site.
In most of our buildings, you’ll also find communal spaces to study, rest and meet with friends. Like quiet study spaces, where you can work on that essay. And gyms, where you can work out after that essay.
