Squash Club
Welcome to Cardiff University Squash Club :)
We welcome players of all abilities whether you’re a seasoned player or just picking up a racket! You’ll find a welcoming community and plenty of opportunities to improve your game!
Opportunities to play squash:
Social Courts Based at Talybont, the Cardiff University Sports Training Village, we run three social club sessions each week, open to players of all levels. These informal sessions take place on Sunday afternoons. We currently start with a beginner’s session from 12-1pm, where basic coaching is available most weeks, from members of the committee. Following this, we have social court sessions from1-3 pm: split into two-hour slots, where no required is required.
Team Training Sessions All team players, are expected to attend a weekly squash training session at Sport Wales, Sophia Gardens, either on Sunday afternoon or evening. These sessions are currently by invitation only, but if you’re new to the sport and eager to get some coaching, let a committee member know, and we can see if there’s space for you!
BUCS Last year, we entered two men’s and two women’s teams into BUCS – the most recognised competition for university sports across the UK. This involves a weekly home or away match on Wednesdays, where you get to travel and compete as a team against another university.
BUCS TournamentIn addition to our regular BUCS matches, we also participate in the BUCS tournament hosted by Nottingham university in early December. The tournament’s open to anyone who wants to compete, and as a club, we rent an Airbnb for the weekend, giving us a chance to explore Nottingham after the matches. It’s a great opportunity to play competitive squash, and in the evenings, we organise socials for all those that want to be involved.
Squash Wales Local LeaguesWe also entered three unisex and one woman’s-only team into our local South-Central league. This involves weekly matches, usually on a Tuesday or Thursday, followed by dinner with the opposing team. It’s a great way to improve your game while also meeting people and enjoying some good food!
Socials
We host weekly fancy-dress socials every Wednesday, which is the highlight of the week for many club members. Our socials are packed with a mix of solo and team challenges, along with the weekly selection of best and worst dressed. It’s a great opportunity to meet new people and get to know other club members better. For those who are interested, most people head to the university club – YOLO afterwards.
In addition to our Wednesday socials, we also have an annual Club Day – a cherished squash tradition that you’ll learn more about if you join.
We also host a Christmas dinner, where we celebrate the year with awards like Most Improved Player and Best Fresher.
And to cap off the year, we organise a Summer Ball, which was attended by over 50 people this year, offering a change to dress up and celebrate in style!
Membership
We offer two types of memberships to cater to different levels of commitment and interest:
-
Social Membership (£40) – For those who want to play squash in a relaxed, friendly environment. This membership includes access to our Sunday social sessions and all club social events.
-

This membership includes everything in the social membership, as well as access to weekly team training sessions, optional entry into the Squash Wales Local Leagues, and the opportunity to represent Cardiff University in BUCS.
