Women's Cricket Club
Develop your cricketing ability and be part of an active, friendly sports team with the Cardiff University Women's Cricket Club.
In CULCC, all abilities are welcome! Whether you regularly take wickets at your local club or have never held a cricket bat in you life. New to the game? You will have the opportunity to learn the sport and be part of an inclusive team, making some great friends along the way! As a member of the development squad, you will recieve coaching from a qualified senior on a weekly basis! Experienced players will be able to get regular practice in with other great cricketers and develop skills even further particualrly along our longer winter training block with help from our coach, Ali Waldron.
We look forward to welcoming new and existing Cardiff University students this year. We will be at the sports fair on the 23rd and 24th September and there will be a virtual event the following week if you are unable to make the sports fair where you can meet some of the committee and ask any questions you may have! We will have two Give It A Go events on the 4th and 6th October to give you a taste of cricket and meet the current members. After that, regular training and socials will commence, which you will need a membership to attend.
Weekly training aims to improve cricket ability as well as general fitness. It includes a variety of cricket-orientated fitness exercises, fielding drills, and batting/bowling practice in the nets. All training will be at Talybont Sports Centre South Hall 6 or at outdoor areas nearby - players who want to get the most out of the club should try to attend every session. We are lucky enough to have Ali Waldron, a local level 4 coach and Germany women's head coach who joins us for our sessions to impart his knowledge and help us improve! The times below are our regular training sessions:
Friday 5:30pm-6:30pm: 1st team training
Sunday 4:00pm-5:30pm: development squad and 1st team fitness
Training is subject to change when we move outdoors for summer
We participate in the BUCS indoor and outdoor leagues, playing indoor matches in the Autumn and outdoor at Cardiff Cricket Club over Summer. oFor the upcoming season, we have entered one team into the Western Tier 1 BUCS league. Competitions against other university women's cricket teams brings out our competitive nature as we strive to win the BUCS league this '25 season! Having entered two teams in the BUCS indoor league (7 a side), our 1s came second regional league, one step away from progessing to nationals!
Not only are we committed to the sport aspect of cricket, but also the social side. Tilly, our social secretary, has some exciting socials planned that will help everyone get to know each other. We hold Wednesday night socials and participate in the sport night at the Students Union (YOLO), especially in the season to celebrate our wins! Frequent non-alcoholic socials are planned such as a weekday dinner at Wagamamas or a coffee afternoon ensure that there is something for everyone to enjoy. Watching international women's games at Sophia Gardens is one of our most popular events over summer once the season has started as it brings the club together as a whole, something we look to maintain as we have done in previous years.

Fun Fact-> the ex-England women's cricket team captain and current player, Heather Knight, studied at Cardiff University!
Additionally, we have had discussions about a potential tour (abroad/UK) to plays teams outside of our regular leages to increase players match experience and give those who wish to travel as supporters the opportunity to enjoy time away with the team and encourge us to a win! This year we are looking to go abroad as a group but coould not schedule fixtures into it, but have arranged plenty friendly fixtures to support our BUCS campaign and make up for this!
As a team, we love engaging in fundraising activities for incredibly worthwhile causes. In 2024 CULCC completed a series of challenges to raise money where we hiked 7.8km from Llyn Fawr to Lyn Fach in cricket pads, took a dip in a lake with a water fall and also completed 78 minutes of non-stop catching. In which through this we were able to raise £2431 pounds for the Turkey and Syria Earthquake Emergency Appeal. Every year CULCC also partake in the 12 days of Christmas food bank challenge, where we help support those in need in Cardiff by donating an item a day leading up to Christmas.
