We're excited to announce that funding has just been approved for the highly anticipated next phase of refurbishment at Cardiff University Students’ Union (CUSU). The redevelopment will see a multi-million pound investment into a much needed renovation of the second floor social space at the Students’ Union.
The second floor of the Students’ Union currently houses the main reception, event function space and the recently developed Centre for Skills, Enterprise and Volunteering. The project application submitted by CUSU focuses on the remainder of the undeveloped space on the second floor of the building including Solus Nightclub, The Kitchen Café and The Taf pub. The redevelopment will modernise and diversify the use of these areas along with resolving a series of maintenance issues. The project will also implement a modern info / meet and greet point, as well as improved access to the back stage areas for event staff.
The project business case proposed some exciting additions to the second floor. These include the creation of a mezzanine balcony level in the existing Solus nightclub, a new outdoor social space, upgraded facilities in The Taf pub, installation of a staircase that will connect CF10 café on the first floor to Solus nightclub increasing venue capacity, and the introduction of a modern, information driven meet and greet space to replace the existing reception area.
Cari Davies, Students’ Union President, is enthusiastic about the redevelopment. “This is a fantastic opportunity for the Students’ Union to create modern and flexible spaces that can be utilised for all sorts of activity. I’m especially excited about the way in which the current nightclub will become multi-functional; allowing students to use it during the daytime as a common room type space. I’d like to thank the University for providing the funding for what will truly be a transformational project; I can’t wait to see the finished product come September 2014!”
The building project was passed by the Cardiff University Policy and Resources Committee on 4th February. The project will now move into the next stage in which CUSU will submit a planning application and will also embark on a schedule of student consultation including input into the final design and a campus wide vote to decide the name of the new nightclub. The new look second floor will be open for freshers’ welcome week 2014.
