The elections are around the corner and soon, very soon, Cardiff students will decide who will lead them. The question is, is it you?
Some people think that only Union geeks can run for one of these jobs, while others believe that only the most confident people could possibly win the elections. Well, both these beliefs are total myths. Several members of our team did have an overly keen love for the Union before they got elected, but 5 out of 8 felt an average level of affection towards it at best. While the idea that only the most confident people win is simply not true, as long as you have a few ideas, combined with the determination to make sure people listen, then you will do as well as the loudest, most dramatic individual.
But why should you run, what’s in it for you?
Many people don’t know this, but as an Elected Officer you automatically sit at the very top of the Students’ Union, and thus are a Director of a £7,000,000 company. How many other University graduates can make that statement? Also, as an elected officer you get a hand in running some of the biggest and best events in the student calendar: Varsity, Fresher’s Fortnight, Go Global, the Summer Ball - to name just a few.
But being an Elected Officer does not just look great on your CV, it’s also an incredible opportunity to represent students on the issues that actually matter. As an officer you get to fight for students’ rights for the things that matter to them. It’s your job to challenge the university on how it treats students to make sure they get the most for their money, to make sure their degrees are actually worth £9,000 a year. It’s your job to stand by students who have been ripped off by their landlords. It’s your job to make sure the police are dealing with crimes against students. This is your job, and no one else is going to do it. There are 29,000 students here at Cardiff, and you’re their voice.
Do you think you could do this job? We will only find out if you run - so think about it and come and talk to one of us.
GET INVOLVED, LOVE CARDIFF.
